Am I being ripped off for a catalytic converter replacement… please help?

My catalytic converter was stolen, and I don’t have comprehensive insurance. I went to a shop, and they quoted me $1300 for the replacement using a non-original part. They explained that whoever stole it cut too close to the oxygen sensor, so that needs to be replaced too, which is why the cost is higher. They also claimed it’s a deal since I don’t have insurance, saying it would usually cost $3000.

Does this sound like a reasonable price, or am I being overcharged because I’m a young woman?

Edit: I drive a 2008 Toyota Prius, live in Illinois, and went to a general mechanic shop, not a muffler shop. Thanks to whoever suggested I mention that.

Edit 2: After reading replies, it seems the price might be fair, and the mechanic’s explanation checks out. Thank you all for the quick and helpful responses!

When thieves steal these, they usually cut everything around it, including sensors. You probably do need to replace it all. Honestly, I think you might actually be getting a good deal.

I agree. Sometimes mechanics give better deals to women than men, especially if they know the customer is really stuck. It happens more than we think.

I have a bunch of older ladies I help at my shop. I keep their cars running on a budget, and every Christmas, I get way too many cookies and snacks from them. It’s the sweetest thing!

That’s so wholesome! My uncle works as a hairstylist, and he gets showered with expensive gifts from his clients. One lady even gave him a Rolex. Some professions really bring out generosity!

Funny how mechanics rarely ask for cookies from male customers. But when they do, those cookies are always amazing!

We did this too at the tire shop I worked at! Older ladies were always bringing us treats. It was such a nice part of the job.

This price seems fair to me. If you’re unsure, get a second opinion from a local shop just to compare.

Catalytic converters are crazy expensive because they contain rare metals like platinum. I need to replace mine on an Audi, and even the non-original part is about $900 here in Canada. Toyota and Honda cars tend to be targeted more because their converters have a lot of these valuable metals.

@August
If you were in California, you’d be looking at CARB-compliant converters, which are even pricier. Those can cost upwards of $3000 just for the part.

$1300 is a bargain for a Prius catalytic converter. I’ve seen them go for $3000 just for the part from a dealer. Prius converters are highly targeted because of the rare metals.

Honestly, you’re getting a good deal here. Maybe bring the shop some pastries or snacks to say thank you for helping you out!

Catalytic converters are super expensive. The thief probably sold yours for $50 while you’re stuck paying the real cost.

Prius converters are so valuable. Thieves go after them because they know how expensive they are to replace.

Sounds like you’re not being ripped off, especially since they’re including the O2 sensor. That price is decent for a professional repair.

If you haven’t already, consider getting a cage installed over your new catalytic converter. Thieves often come back to the same car once it’s replaced. A cage can make it a lot harder for them to steal it again.
