Any good dog food for diabetes that isn’t prescription?

My big dog was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He’s 11 years old, neutered, and now on insulin. The vet prescribed Science Diet w/d, but it’s super pricey. Given how much he eats, a $119 bag doesn’t last long at all.

I’ve been looking for a non-prescription option that’s still good for diabetic dogs. I want to stick to WSAVA-approved foods, but it’s hard to sort through all the opinions online. Diabetic support groups seem to bash WSAVA foods, and it’s overwhelming trying to read every single label.

Anyone here have suggestions that won’t break the bank but are still safe and healthy for him?

You’re better off trusting your vet over random opinions. Keep him on the food your vet recommended.

I get that, but I just can’t afford it long-term. That’s why I’m hoping someone here might know a good alternative that’s not prescription but still works for diabetic dogs.

@Ash
You could ask your vet if they know of any affordable non-prescription options. A while back, my vet had a list of regular dog foods that were safe for diabetic pets.

I switched to Solid Gold hund-n-flocken everyday nutrition for my dog. It’s way cheaper than Glycobalance, and it’s lower in fat too. Might be worth looking into.
