Hey everyone! I’m looking into college options and wondering if there are any ways to go tuition-free in Texas. I’ve heard there might be options for veterans and community college programs that cover some costs. Anyone have tips or experience with this?
Yep! If you’re a veteran, there’s the Hazlewood Act. It gives up to 150 credit hours at Texas public schools tuition-free if you qualify.

Oh wow, that’s cool! Do you know if it covers stuff like books or just the tuition part?
@Tracy
Just tuition, unfortunately. You still have to cover books and other costs.
For non-veterans, some community colleges have tuition-free programs, especially for first-time students. It’s usually tied to financial need.

That’s true, but check each college’s requirements since they might vary.

Thanks! Do these programs cover other fees, or is it just tuition?
@Zen
Usually just tuition. You might still have to pay for books and other materials.
Texas also has a program for seniors! People over 65 can take some classes for free each semester at public colleges.

Wow, I didn’t know that. Can they take any classes they want?
@Taj
Yeah, up to six credits per semester, but they have to meet residency requirements.
A lot of schools also offer free tuition for freshmen and transfer students based on income or GPA. They check FAFSA to see if you qualify.

True, but there are usually strings attached. You need a certain GPA and minimum credits to keep the scholarship.
@Winter
Yeah, it’s not totally free if you don’t keep your grades up.
Some community colleges started doing free tuition programs to boost enrollment too. Worth checking with your local college!

Do all community colleges in Texas have free tuition now?
@Aspen
Not all, but some do if you meet the requirements like being an in-state resident with financial need.
