My 12-year-old grandson got into a fight at school, and now they’re saying he could be expelled or sent to an alternative school for 45 days. It all started with a 6-day suspension, but now it’s escalated to an expulsion hearing. Has anyone gone through something like this before? We’re worried about what to do next.
Oh man, that’s tough! Have you guys thought about appealing? Sometimes it helps if you show them more evidence or explain the situation again.
We’re considering it, but we’re also nervous that the punishment might get worse if we appeal.
Yeah, I get that. It’s definitely a risk. Maybe check with a lawyer before moving forward?
Sounds like what happened to my kid. We pushed back, and the school ended up downgrading the punishment. Did they provide any video evidence of the fight?
Yeah, they showed us a video, and it does show him there, but he didn’t actually start fighting until someone else came at him. The school still classified it as a level 3 offense though.
That’s annoying. Maybe you can argue that it wasn’t as serious as they’re making it sound. The video should help with that.
Did the school give your grandson a chance to explain his side? That can make a difference in how they handle the punishment.
He did get to explain his side, but they still gave him the alternative school option. It feels like they didn’t really consider what he said.
That’s so frustrating! Definitely appeal if you feel like they didn’t hear him out.
Is there any chance of getting the punishment reduced if he does some time at the alternative school first?
We haven’t heard anything about that option yet. We’re still trying to figure out the next steps.
My niece went through this and we ended up getting the expulsion reduced to just a short stay at the alternative school. Definitely worth appealing!
Thanks, that’s good to know! We’ll look into appealing and hopefully can get the same result.
