My 4-year-old daughter, who has special needs, is in a private school that requires kids under 5 to have a quiet rest time for 30-45 minutes. She just can’t sit still or stay quiet that long, so when she acts out, they tell me to come pick her up. It’s so frustrating because she’s missing a lot of school time because of this. I thought private schools would be more accommodating. Has anyone else had this issue?
Same here with my nephew! His school also pushed for quiet rest, but he couldn’t handle it. They ended up letting him read quietly instead.

That would be perfect! I asked if they could do something like that, but they just want her to follow the rest time.

Why are they so stuck on this rule? Especially since it’s a private school!
I think CA law requires the rest time, but forcing you to pick her up early seems extreme. Have you tried talking to the principal?

Yep, I’ve talked to the school admin and teachers, but they keep saying it’s the rule.

Maybe try connecting with a local advocate for special needs? They might know how to get around these kinds of policies.
Does she get any accommodations to help her rest? My daughter’s school lets her use a calming app with music during rest time.

They gave her a headset with music, but it doesn’t seem to keep her calm. She’s just too restless.

Has she tried any deep breathing or calming exercises? Might help her adjust a bit.

Yeah, we’ve tried a few things, but it’s really hard for her to stay in one place that long.
I heard that private schools don’t have to provide the same accommodations. It’s frustrating when they don’t even try to be flexible.

I know, right? I thought they would work with us more, but it feels like they’re just following a strict rule.

Have you thought about other schools? Some might be more open to accommodations.
If they won’t budge, maybe look into legal options? Some parents have had success with that.

I’ve thought about it, but I was hoping to avoid that route. It just feels like there’s no other choice.

Even just bringing it up might make them rethink things. Schools don’t want legal hassles.
