Anyone into fast and close-to-the-ground jungle drone flying?

I wanted to share some footage from a recent flight that’s low to the ground and pretty fast through a jungle. Any thoughts?

Should I post the vid where I hit 130 km/h with the Avata 2? It’s kind of a grey area legality-wise, so I haven’t uploaded it yet. Haven’t seen anyone else reach that speed on the Avata 2.

@Kiran
I was just joking around, that’s still an impressive run.

Still, you’re right… maybe I should try going faster

Can I ask what model of drone you’re using? The video quality and HUD display are impressive.

That’s the DJI Avata. Not sure if it’s the 1 or 2. I’ve got one with the same HUD setup.

@Marcus
You can tell by the bitrate. Avata 1 shows 50 Mbps in the HUD, while Avata 2 shows 60 Mbps when there’s OSD footage.

When you say ‘fast’…

Depends on the reference point… for a DJI drone, this speed is actually quick. I have another clip where I pushed it up to 130 km/h.

4K60fps

You can see you’re getting more comfortable as the video goes on… nice work

Looks good, but I think a bit more speed would make it even better

It’s a fun line to follow, but I think if you check out some FPV racing videos, you might get a new sense of what counts as ‘fast.’

Racing drones can’t really do this kind of video quality since it’s risky for them. I could push the Avata 2 a bit more, but once I tilt past 40 degrees, I tend to lose control and crash. Maybe I’ll try staying above 70 km/h throughout a whole run… could make for a good video if I try freestyling with my 5-inch and add GPS to show the speed. People seem to like crash vids, so maybe I’ll go full throttle over 100 km/h in a forest and see what happens!

@Kiran
Does video quality really affect speed? You mentioned ‘fast and low,’ but it looked more like 45 km/h for most parts, especially in the jungle. Out in the open, you’re hitting good speeds, but in the trees, it’s a bit slower.

Freestyle drones with a GoPro usually give better image quality at much faster speeds too.

@Zephyr
Good point… what speed would you like to see? I’d probably need to practice a set route.

Yes, practicing a specific route is the way to go. One of the first FPV videos I ever watched was this old race session in the woods. It’s about 10 years old now, but still pretty intense. Even some abandoned building runs feel faster because of how close to the ground they are.

@Zephyr
True… the thing is, I don’t want it to just look fast because it’s close to the ground, but then only show 65 km/h on the OSD. I just figured out how to overlay OSD on 4k stabilized footage, which not many are doing. My 5-inch with 03 doesn’t get great video quality, so I’ll have to wait for the 04 Pro to really get it right.
