Anyone taken paid leave for mental health? Would love to hear your experiences

Hi all! I’m in the process of requesting a medical leave to focus on my mental health. I’ve been managing depression for a while and work has been really draining lately. I’m wondering if anyone has taken paid mental health leave and has advice? What should I know before/after starting this?

I took leave for mental health, but only when I was in a program. If you’re dealing with SI (suicidal ideation), you might want to consider an IOP (intensive outpatient program). They offer group therapy, CBT, DBT, and more without having to stay overnight.

Thank you! I’ll bring it up with my therapist and see if that’s something she recommends. I feel like being away from work will help a lot.

Sorry, what’s IOP?

It stands for Intensive Outpatient Program. You go during the day for therapy but don’t stay overnight. It can be really helpful!

DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) was a game-changer for me. I struggled with SI too, and it really helped me manage those thoughts.

I’m a therapist and second the idea of trying IOP. It’s a great way to get more support during your leave. Good luck with everything!

After my first suicide attempt, I did an IOP program, and it really kept me connected to my treatment. You don’t have to go inpatient to get serious help.

I’m definitely open to it if my therapist thinks it’s a good fit. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I just want to wish you the best of luck. It’s so important to take care of your mental health. I haven’t taken leave, but I hope you get the time you need.
