Applying for a master's with a misdemeanor... should I be worried?

Thinking about applying for a master’s program, but I have a misdemeanor on my record. I know some schools ask about this, and I’m not sure how much it matters. Do they care a lot, or do they look at everything else more? Anyone been in a similar situation?

Yeah, most universities check, but it’s not the only thing they care about. They’ll look at your academics, work experience, and everything else too.

Good to know. So honesty is the best move if they ask?

@Darian
Definitely. Just be upfront and explain it if they bring it up.

It probably depends on the type of misdemeanor and how long ago it happened. Schools care more about what you’re doing now.

Yeah, it was a few years ago. No issues since then.

@Darian
Then you should be fine. If they ask, just focus on how you’ve moved on from it.

Letters of recommendation will help a lot. Professors or bosses vouching for you can really strengthen your application.

That’s a good idea. I’ll make sure to get strong recommendations.

Some schools have policies for applicants with records. Might be worth reaching out to admissions and asking how they handle it.

Hadn’t thought of that. I’ll check their policies, thanks!

Really appreciate all the advice! This makes me feel way better about applying.

No problem! Hope you get into the program you want.
