Are there any books in English that tell the same story as the SLF manga? I didn’t know it came from books, and I’d rather read those.

No, there aren’t any approved English versions of the Shangri-La Frontier light novels (LN) or web novels (WN) out there right now. You can only read the story in Japanese right now.

Does that read correctly? I am reading the manga and really want to translate LN/WN, but I have not made up my mind to do so yet because the quality of the translations is so inconsistent.

No LNs are present. The WN is directly adapted into SLF manga. However, a fan TL-ed WN exists. Just put in “kusoge hunter ln” in a search box, and you can obtain additional information from the top search
I think as of today only fan translated web novel exist no approved English version yet.
