Best brand of laptops in the modern age?

@Uma
>ARM windows is very different thing to apple though

I think 1) it’s far too early to tell how similar or different it is in performance and code migration (from X86 to ARM) and 2) early reports at least indicate comparable battery life and some similar CPU benchmarks, which as early indicators go are very good towards the platforms having a high degree of comparable capabilities. The GPU is nowhere near the Mac one, but that’s something that will be improved over time, and honestly, I’d be much more interested in an ARM CPU system and an Nvidia or AMD GPU pairing vs the integrated GPU.

@Andi
I meant for programs to run. That even x86 macs did not get many games ported to it. Based on same cpu architeture does not mean that it is same.

And? That was a long time ago. 4 years since the switch now, and the Macs are a lot more appealing due to the ARM chipset. That switch to X86 from Power PC definitely helped make the Macs a lot more gaming friendly, especially with Windows switching on the same CPU. And Hackintoshes took off. They could do so again here. Plus, Apple didn’t take gaming seriously before. They’re clearly more into pushing it now, so it’s got a stronger foundation than ever before.

>not mean that it is same

No one says they’re the same, obviously. But it’s equally obvious that if gaming takes off on the ARM CPUs on Windows, that’s a huge unlock for gaming on the Mac because it’s the same instruction set for the CPUs.

In terms of longevity, durability and reliability it’s probably Lenovo ThinkPad.

ASUS is decent too. Avoid HP. Dell isn’t as good as it’s competitors either.

Best advice I can give is this, don’t judge the brand, judge the products individually. Good brands can make shit laptops and shit brands, though unlikely, can make good laptops.

Asus has some of the crapiest designs

most brands make some terribe laptops, most of them make some good laptops, all of them have terrible customer serivece, terrible RMAs, and other annoying crap like that

it depends on the model but hardware wise ive found asus to be decent on their mid range laptops like probooks and vivobooks

@Khai
Disagree for smaller brands like Eluktronics. Good products and great customer support.

Seems decent but definitely on the higher end

If you don’t need much performance, Dell XPS, latitude 9000, precision, Lenovo thinkpad
Razer blade if you need extra performance. But those are really expensive.
But probably the most durable laptops nowadays are macbooks, they can easily last 7-10 years

@Beryl
Dell XPS doesn’t provide much performance?

The new 14 and 16 line comes with extremely low TDP, dell is undervolting the CPU and GPU. Check just josh review about it and you will see.
But still very premium design, should last long time.

Brand wise Lenovo for their customer service. Apple because as an all rounder, Macs are untouchable.

Lenovo thinkpads probably

If you have money for a premium laptop, Razer 18 is simple but really, really nice.

Lenovo X, T and P series.

By the way, a (not new) laptop from 2018 that dies in 2024 isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible either right? How long were you planning on using a laptop?

Framework laptop for upgradability and support :grin:

Laptop is my main worktool for long years already. I travel with it a lot, and I’m using it in very wide spectrum of conditions. I tried different types, different brands, but 5 years ago I buyed thinkpad(e570 I think), and I belive I will stay with thinkpads. I know not everybody is satisfied with them, but its the best laptop I ever had.

Lenovo is pretty solid these days. I’ve had a couple of them, and the most annoying issue has been that one of them spins up it fans slightly louder than is should. They’ve all been very reliable and are built solid. I mean, all companies have lemons though, and any part could just lose the manufacturing lottery, so nothing out there is a promise.
