Best places to put dynamat to reduce rattle?

I got a 36 sqft bulk package of dynamat and I want to get rid of as much rattle as I can with what I have. Any tips on the best places to apply it?

It depends on what’s rattling. CLD material is good for resonance and should be applied to the biggest panels you can find.

Start by treating the areas where the rattles are the loudest. Thin, loose metal that wasn’t treated at the factory is usually where the problem is. For most people, the rear license plate rattles first, then check around the door speakers, and on the inside of each door frame. It helps dampen the sound and reduces ringing, so it makes the car sound a lot better. After those, you can treat the door frames, kick panels, roof, trunk lid, floorboards, wheel wells, and firewall.

Pretty much anywhere you can tap with your fingers and hear an echo sound—like the outer door skins, flat metal on the trunk lid, or the roof. If you want the biggest impact, just tap the metal with your finger. If it makes more than a dull thud, that’s where you need CLD material.

Big flat panels of metal that can flex are the best spots.

Roll the windows up and down, then walk around and listen for rattles. You’ll probably notice them in the trunk and doors. When I used to install dynamat, I sprayed it in my whole trunk and rear deck lid of my 1992 Camry, and it was rattle-free. In my current truck, I put a couple of sheets on each outer door and around the speakers on the inner door skin, plus some on the back wall behind the rear seats. Now there’s no rattle. My system isn’t huge, but I have a JL 12W3 in a sealed box running off a 600-watt amp. Oh, and if you have a car, definitely do the rear license plate while you’re at it. Every car is different.
