Buying a car from an impound auction… what do the letters on the hood mean?

Hi everyone, I’m planning to get a car from an impound auction and noticed some letters, like AU or AV, written on the hood. Does anyone know what these stand for? Are they codes for something specific? Thanks!

Hey there! If you’re asking for help, it’s good to include details like the year, make, model, mileage, engine size, and if the car has an automatic or manual transmission. This info helps people give better answers. This is just a standard reminder for posts. Good luck with your question!

Maybe the car is gold? Just a thought!

I think it might just mean ‘auction.’ Makes sense for cars being sold there.

It’s probably written with a grease pencil. They usually do that to mark cars for auctions or to keep track of them in the lot. If you look at the car behind it, you’ll probably notice similar markings.

Before you buy it, check the floorboards carefully. If they’re wet, it could be a big problem.

Yep, wet floorboards can mean clogged sunroof drains or a bad windshield seal above the cabin air filter. That can cause water to pool under the carpet, and the transmission computer might be there. It’s pretty easy to pull the carpet back and check though.

Totally agree. I’m living with this issue in my 5-speed 02 wagon right now. It’s a headache!

I feel your pain! I’ve got an 01 sedan with the V6. It’s at 200k miles, and the only reason it’s still running is because I do all the work myself. Had a torque converter go out a couple of years ago, and this year I had to replace all the ignition wiring. It’s decent though—drinks too much gas for a sedan, but it’s still comfy and somehow more reliable than my F150 even though it’s 12 years older.
