Wondering if my child in special ed classes with a modified curriculum can still get a high school diploma in California. I know they won’t meet A-G requirements, but is a non A-G diploma possible? Anyone dealt with this before?
Yes, it’s definitely possible. My child is in special ed and will be getting a non A-G diploma because their IEP sets the graduation criteria.

Good to know! So the diploma doesn’t need to meet the A-G standards but still counts, right?

Exactly. It’s not for college admission but it’s still recognized as a diploma in CA.
Our district lets students in special ed earn a diploma as long as they meet their IEP goals. It’s all about the IEP standards.

Got it! I’ll make sure our IEP team goes over the requirements with us.

Good idea! The IEP team is key to making sure everything’s on track for graduation.
If your child is in core content classes, they could qualify for a non A-G diploma. My kid’s school offers it to students who meet their modified curriculum goals.

Thanks! That sounds like it might be possible for us too.

Definitely check with your school. They’ll let you know exactly what’s needed.
Each district has their own requirements. But as long as the modified curriculum meets IEP standards, a non A-G diploma should be possible.

Thanks, I’ll reach out to the district to be sure we understand the requirements.

Yeah, the district can help you figure out exactly what’s needed to stay on track.
My kid’s on a modified curriculum and they’re set to earn a diploma. Just keep up with the IEP team and make sure everything’s in order.

This is super reassuring, thank you! I’ll keep on top of it with the IEP team.

That’s the way to go. They’ll make sure all the graduation requirements are clear.
