Can boarding schools expel students for just a few unexcused absences?

Hey all, curious if a boarding school can actually kick a student out over 3-5 unexcused absences. Has anyone had experience with this?

It usually depends on the school’s policies. Private boarding schools often have specific rules, so if it’s in their contract, they might be allowed to enforce it.

Yeah, check the enrollment agreement or student handbook. They often outline how strict they are about absences.

@Weston
Makes sense, I’ll take a look. Wasn’t sure how serious they would be about it.

Private schools do have to track attendance, but they usually have more freedom in setting and enforcing rules compared to public schools. Which state is this in?

It’s in California. I thought private schools might have their own set of rules here.

California does let private schools set their own policies more freely. So it could vary a lot by school.

A lot of times, boarding schools would give a warning or put the student on probation first before actually withdrawing them over attendance issues.

Right, it seems pretty extreme to withdraw for a few unexcused absences without some kind of probation first.

@Reese
Agreed. You could ask if they’d be open to other options if they haven’t done any of that yet.

If they haven’t gotten back to you officially, I’d definitely follow up. You should have a clear decision on something like this.

Good call. I’ll give them another call on Monday. Haven’t seen anything formal in writing.

Yeah, for something big like this, they should definitely put it in writing. Hope they get back to you soon.

Check out the school’s attendance policy. Some schools have strict rules, but others are a bit more flexible with reasons for absences.

Good point. If you have a valid reason for the absences, they might consider that too.
