I’m in a tough spot and could use some advice. A professor accused me of harassment, which I completely deny, but the college still suspended me. It feels like the professor’s word was taken as fact without evidence. Are there rules to protect students from false accusations, especially if a professor might be biased? What if this is happening because of discrimination? Can a professor really have that much control over a student’s future without oversight?
That sounds awful! Professors do have authority, but they’re not supposed to act without evidence. Did they explain their reasoning?

Not really. They just said it was based on what the professor claimed.

Sounds like they skipped due process. Colleges are supposed to investigate and hear both sides. Did they give you a chance to defend yourself?
If discrimination might be a factor, you should look into Title IX. It’s there to protect students in cases like this.

I’ve heard of Title IX but don’t know how to use it. Does it cover false accusations too?

Yes, it does! It’s about ensuring fairness and preventing discrimination. You can file a complaint through your college’s Title IX office.
This sounds like a violation of your rights. Have you looked into the school’s appeal process?

They mentioned an appeal process, but I’m not sure how much weight my side will have.

If you document everything and present your case clearly, appeals can work. Don’t give up on that option.
Have you thought about bringing in legal help or an advocate? They might be able to pressure the school to take this more seriously.

I haven’t yet, but I’m thinking about it. I just want to understand my options first.

That’s smart. Legal support can help make sure your rights are respected.
If this is about bias, you can file a complaint with the school’s administration. They have to investigate discrimination claims.

I might do that. Just worried about how long it could take to get resolved.

True, it could take a while, but it also forces the school to take a closer look at what’s happening.
