My son just started kindergarten, and he has ADHD, a tic disorder, and struggles with sensory needs and behavior. He’s got an IEP with goals for social skills and emotional regulation, but the school decided to split his recess—one with a small group for practice and the other indoors by himself. Shouldn’t he be outside to help with energy? Does this align with his IEP?
Wow, I’d feel the same way. Outdoor play seems important for ADHD. Have you thought about asking for extra support?

Yeah, I was thinking of asking for a 1:1 aide. Can they say no if I ask?

They might, but you can challenge it if it’s part of his needs. Maybe bring it up in your meeting?
If his IEP has goals for social skills, isolating him doesn’t seem to help. Does the plan align with those goals?

That’s what I’m worried about—it feels like it’s not helping his social development at all.

Maybe ask how they’re measuring progress? They should explain how this fits into his IEP.
Why are they keeping him indoors? Are they worried about safety or something?

Yeah, he had a few bad moments—broke a kid’s glasses and had some aggressive behavior. But it still seems extreme.

Sounds like he might need help managing that during play, not being isolated. Could they add someone to assist him?
They’ve added walking breaks and skill-building time, right? Are those helping yet?

Hard to say—it’s only been 8 days, and the schedule is pretty new. Hoping they help over time.

Maybe keep track of how he does with those and bring it up at the meeting if it’s not working.
IDK, outdoor play seems so key for kids like him. Can you push for more time outside instead of isolation?

Good idea, I’ll suggest it during the meeting. Thanks for the advice!
