Can't access my external SSD drive on Windows... but can on Linux?

Having a rather unusual problem here. I have an external SSD that I use for watching video files on 4K TVs and Blu-ray players. Suddenly, after I put some video files (.mkv) on it and used it on my Blu-ray, it can no longer be plugged into a computer running Windows. When I plug it in, I get the error: ‘H:\ is not accessible. Access is Denied.’ The drive appears in ‘This PC,’ but it has no storage bar, and it shows as NTFS. It works just fine on the Blu-ray player and my Steam Deck (Linux), but refuses to work on Windows. I’ve tried it on a laptop with Windows 11 too. Any ideas on how to fix this? It’s not vital data, but I want to prevent this from happening again.

Sounds like it might be Windows getting mixed up with user permissions. You could attempt to take ownership of the drive. I imagine those other systems just flat-out don’t care about Windows user permissions, so they ignore it.

I’ll try it out later. Would make sense, though all my other external drives work just fine. It’s just this particular SSD that doesn’t seem to work.

Stickied comment: Making changes to your system BIOS settings or disk setup can cause you to lose data. Always test your data backups before making changes to your PC.

All the more reason it would be a Windows permissions issue. Your Windows machines check the owner and who is allowed to read the files. If it doesn’t find your username on that list, it tells you access denied. Taking control could help you manage permissions.
