I’ve been told I can’t drive a truck anymore because of an illness I had. I’ve had two transient global amnesic attacks and was hospitalized. Now I might not be able to do my regular job for the next five years unless I prove I’ve had no recurrence. I’m on long-term disability, which is 50% of my regular pay, but I’m not sure what else I can do. Anyone know what my options are here?
Man, that’s tough. Are you allowed to ask for reasonable accommodations at work?

I think so, but I’m not sure what qualifies. Do you know how that works?

Reasonable accommodations mean changes to your job so you can still work. It has to be fair for the company too.
Have you talked to your employer about what they can do? They might have to accommodate you under the ADA.

Not yet, but I should probably look into that. Any tips on how to ask for accommodations?

You could use a template to request accommodations. There are online forms you can edit for your situation.
What exactly is a transient global amnesic attack? Never heard of that before.

It’s a condition where you temporarily lose your memory. It’s rare, but it happened to me twice.
If you’re on long-term disability, are you getting help from Social Security too?

Not yet. I’m just getting 50% of my pay from the plan I paid into at work.

You might want to look into Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). It could add to what you’re getting.
Can your employer legally make you wait five years to prove you’re okay to return to work?

They can set conditions if your job involves safety risks. It has to be fair and not unreasonable, though.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess the truck-driving part makes it stricter.
