Daughter missing all her breaks to catch up... is this okay?

My daughter is a bit behind at school, and her teacher has her using every recess, lunch, and break to finish assignments. This just doesn’t seem fair to me. She’s always been a bit slower-paced but is on par with her classmates in understanding. I asked if she could bring work home instead to get some break time back, but apparently, they don’t allow it. I’m wondering if there are any rules around this kind of thing or if anyone’s dealt with a similar situation? We’re in Jackson County, Oregon, if that helps.

That sounds tough! Have they offered any other support, like tutoring or after-school help?

No, nothing outside of making her work through breaks. It just feels like she’s being isolated socially too.

Not letting her have any break seems extreme. Maybe speak with the principal?

Kids need breaks for sure, especially at her age. Maybe check if there’s a school policy on this?

Good point. I’ll look into the school’s policy. She’s one of the youngest in her grade, so missing breaks has been hard.

If she’s always been on the slower side, have you asked if she qualifies for any learning support?

Haven’t yet, but I might. She’s bright, just works at her own pace.

It could help. Schools are often required to provide accommodations if kids need them.

Kids need time to recharge, especially during the school day. How is she handling all this?

She manages well at home, but I worry that missing every break at school is exhausting her.

Understandable. It’s important she gets to relax too.

If they don’t budge, maybe consider talking to the school district. She should get some downtime with her friends.

Good idea, I’ll definitely escalate if needed. Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Absolutely. Schools sometimes change things when they hear from the district.
