My daughter made a pretty bad call – she forged a doctor’s note for her first day of school, and her professor actually called the doctor to check. They found out it was fake, and now the professor is saying he’ll report it to the dean even though she dropped the class. Has anyone been through something like this or have any advice?
That’s a tough one! Maybe an apology would help? Sometimes professors appreciate when students own up to mistakes.

We thought about that. She’s really nervous but might try talking to him.

I agree, it could make a difference. Being sincere and taking responsibility might make him reconsider reporting her.
Definitely check your school’s academic conduct policy. Some schools have specific ways of handling this, and it might outline what she can expect.

Good idea, I’ll look into it. Want to be prepared if it goes to the dean.
Maybe getting legal advice wouldn’t hurt? Some education lawyers deal with stuff like this.

We haven’t thought about that yet. Hoping it doesn’t come to that, but it’s good to know!

It’s always good to know your rights, just in case.
Has she considered writing an apology? A heartfelt letter might show the professor she’s taking it seriously.

That’s a good suggestion. She might find it easier to express herself in writing.
Even if she dropped the class, the professor may still see it as a conduct issue. Apologizing might help, but he could still report it.

Yeah, we know it might still go on her record. Just hoping for the best at this point.

If this is her first time getting in trouble, maybe they’ll be more understanding. First-time offenses sometimes get lighter consequences.
