Hi, I’m very new to PC parts so there may be missing detail. My PC uses an Nvidia Geforce RTX 1660 super, it’s less than a year old and I haven’t noticed any issues leading up to this. Today I loaded Skyrim with a big mod pack for the first time, I was in game for 5 seconds before my whole PC crashed. It now only boots when the GPU is unplugged, and I don’t have a spare to test, so I can only conclude that it’s fried. However, googling and Reddit deep diving has made me feel it’s unlikely that the game was enough to instantly fry the graphics card. Is it possible, or could there be an issue with another part?
That sounds rough. It’s unlikely that just loading a game would fry your GPU, but overheating or a power surge could do it. Have you checked your PSU?
I haven’t checked the PSU. What should I be looking for?
Look for any signs of damage like burnt smell or blown capacitors. Also, make sure it’s providing enough power for your GPU.
It might not be the game itself. Sometimes, if a GPU is already on the edge, even a small demand could push it over. Have you tried reseating the GPU?
No, I haven’t tried that. How do I reseat it?
Just turn off your PC, unplug it, take out the GPU, and put it back in the same slot. Make sure it’s secure.
I’ve had similar issues before. Sometimes drivers can cause weird crashes too. Have you updated your GPU drivers recently?
I did update them right before I played. Maybe that’s part of the problem?
Could be. Sometimes rolling back to a previous driver can help. Just something to consider.
This might sound silly, but did you check if the GPU fans were spinning? If the GPU overheated, that could cause a crash.
I didn’t think to check that. I’ll look next time I boot it up.
