Did I see a mouse-deer in Oklahoma?

I live in the Ouachita Mountains in Oklahoma and recently, at night, this small creature approached me. It was about the size of a wild rabbit but had distinct differences. Its ears were short and rounded, it had a long snout, and its legs were thin and long. I’ve looked online but haven’t found any local wildlife that matches. Does anyone know what it might have been?

It sounds like you might have encountered something quite rare for the area! Are you sure it wasn’t a young deer?

You might want to check out the Patagonian Cavy, sometimes just called a Cavy.

That’s an interesting suggestion!

Yes, unfortunately, they might have escaped from a breeder or a private owner. They’re legal to own in some states with the right permits.

The size seems about right, but the facial features and ears look a bit off from what I saw.

Maybe it was a jackalope?

A Cavy is actually quite similar to a jackalope but without the antlers and they are definitely real.

Jackalopes are quite the myth but fascinating creatures!

Could it have been an armadillo?

Maybe it was a weasel?

I’m familiar with weasels and can confidently say it wasn’t one.
