Hi everyone, I’m repping a teacher’s union in Illinois. Our contract says we have 20 work days to file a grievance once we know about an issue. Do salary disputes work on the same timeline, or is there a different rule for those?
Usually, salary issues are on the same timeline. But if it keeps happening with each paycheck, maybe it’s an ongoing issue?

That’s what I was wondering too. It seems like every payday, the issue just pops up again.

If it repeats each payday, maybe you can argue it’s a recurring problem, not a one-off.

Are they giving extra teaching periods without extra pay? That sounds like something to file a grievance over.
Yes, some teachers are covering double periods but aren’t seeing any extra pay. It’s pretty frustrating.

If the contract says they should get extra pay, you’ve got solid ground for a grievance.
You’re allowed to talk about union issues on the job without it affecting pay, right? Makes organizing a grievance easier.

Yeah, we can meet up on-site without losing pay. That definitely helps with getting everyone on board.

Nice! Not all unions get that option. Use it to your advantage while building the case.
Might be safer to stick to interoffice mail instead of work email for union stuff. Employers can get picky about that.

Good point. We’ve been using interoffice mail for the more formal stuff, just to be careful.

Yeah, better to keep it off work email if you can. Some places really crack down on that.
If there are teachers across multiple schools with the same issue, can it be filed as a single grievance?

Yep, our contract lets us combine it if it affects a group. We just list each supervisor on the form.

That should simplify things. Just make sure all the supervisors know it’s a group case.
