Elantra 2025 or Sonata 2024?

I’m looking to buy my first car :D. I’m torn between the Elantra and Sonata. I like the sporty look of the Elantra and its nice interior, but the Sonata is faster and feels more modern. I genuinely like both cars, and their exteriors are really appealing to me. While I’m not a huge fan of the interiors, I think I can modify them to my liking. My decision will hinge on reliability, looks, and driving enjoyment. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I personally prefer the Sonata.

Another vote for the Sonata. It’s not much more expensive and is a bigger car that will handle bumps better, plus it’s safer in an accident.

You mention the Sonata is faster, but that depends on the trim. The Elantra N-line is significantly faster than most Sonata trims, except for the N-line Sonata which is the fastest version. I think the N-line trims for both cars are the best options. However, the Elantra Limited has more features for the price.

I was considering either the 2024 Sonata SEL or the 2024 Elantra N-line. The prices were quite similar (trading in my 2024 Kona).

I chose the Elantra N-line due to more features, like a moonroof and Bose speakers, and it’s much more enjoyable to drive. The Sonata does have comfier armrests.

The Sonata is more expensive for higher trims, but the Elantra is easier to maneuver and park.

I’m not very knowledgeable about cars, so my response might not be helpful. I asked my dealer, and he said both are middle trims (not lower or higher), but he said they don’t use specific trim names here??? I’m unsure .

@Tatum
It seems your salesperson might not know what they’re talking about. I faced a similar situation when buying my Hyundai; I was teaching the salesperson about the cars they were selling. You shouldn’t buy a car based on a vague answer like that. They need to tell you specifics like trim level and engine type. Make them explain all the different features.

The sticker should indicate the trim. From what you described, it sounds like they’re trying to sell you an SEL or a convenience package (if you’re in the U.S.). The SEL convenience is typically a mid-range trim and usually has a good stock. It includes a balance of features at a reasonable price, with a moonroof and other perks compared to the regular SEL.

I’d say Sonata without question. While I like the Elantra for its sporty vibe, the Sonata has better material quality and interior comfort, plus more space.

Which trim are you considering for both?

I’m not quite sure  but they both have the same features.

Double-check because, for instance, an Elantra Limited might have better features compared to a Sonata SEL without a convenience package.

Ask another dealer or request to speak with the manager. Trim names come from Hyundai, not the dealer. The fact that they aren’t providing trim names is unprofessional. Always compare prices at another dealer to ensure you’re not being overcharged, especially since you seem unsure about the details. Car dealers often prefer selling to people who aren’t well-informed.

I’d recommend the Sonata. You’ll appreciate the extra space.

I feel similarly but I’m eyeing the 2025 Elantra N and the 2024 (or possibly 2025) Sonata N Line. I’m caught between these two; both are fantastic sporty options under 40k.

I prefer the Sonata N-Line’s appearance, but I enjoy the Elantra N’s performance more.

Choose the Sonata if you value speed and comfort. For performance and cornering prowess, go with the Elantra. The Sonata features better Bose speakers (12 vs. 8) and generally provides more space. The Elantra is comfortable and spacious enough for most needs, though. It’s probably easier to negotiate a deal on a Sonata N-Line than on the Elantra N.

IVT vs. 8-speed traditional auto

Go for the Sonata - the belts aren’t great.

Unless you’re opting for the N trims, then disregard my input.

I love my 2021 Sonata. It has more space, is stylish, and nothing else on the road looks like it.

Definitely the Sonata.

Go for the Sonata.
