I’ve been working on this technique for 2 years and I think I’ve got it right. Let me know if you have any questions about the process
Looks great. How do you go about getting the tilt-shift effect?

Thanks. Here’s what I do:
- Oversaturate to really give it that toy-like look. Adjust contrast and other settings as needed.
- The blur is the longest part. I use two stages: a heavy blur at the top and bottom, and a softer blur towards the middle. Add a vignette to focus attention on the center.
- When taking pictures, aim for a 30-45° angle looking down. It gives the most convincing results.
- Keep the blur direction horizontal or slightly tilted, as it looks more natural. Circular or vertical blurs don’t usually work as well for this effect.

Thanks for the tips. I usually just add heavy blur gradients horizontally or along natural lines, but I’ve never tried oversaturating or adding a vignette. I’ll give it a shot.

Oversaturation normally looks bad, but for this effect, it works because you’re selling the idea that it’s a toy scene.
@Dani
Awesome tips. I’ll try this tomorrow.

Cool! Also, check the conversation between me and BorisLip. I edited one of his photos and explained my process. That might help too.
@Dani
Appreciate it .

Funny how in stop-motion animation, they do everything to hide that it’s all miniature!

I’m curious too—what’s your step-by-step for this?

@Sky
Do you have the original version without tilt-shift? I can edit it and explain what I do.

Yeah, I found the raw file. It’s from 2017 with the original Mavic Pro. Unedited, it looks bad, but here’s the link: Dropbox
@Dani
Thanks for the help .
Is this a construction site for ants or what?

The construction site must be at least three times this size .
You can tell it’s real because three people are standing around and only one is working.
