How do you pick what stays and what goes?

Here’s my situation: I’m still pretty new to woodworking and recently scored a big pile of hardwood cutoffs for free on Marketplace. There are a bunch of small pieces I might end up tossing, but there are also some decent 2-3’ strips and a few even longer pieces. I can identify some of the obvious types, like walnut, but I’m clueless on a lot of the other species. My goal is to make some frames, maybe a cutting board or two, and a few small boxes. I’d also like to practice joinery.

I tend to hang on to things (hoarder instincts kicking in!), but I’d really love to know how more experienced woodworkers decide what scraps are worth keeping. What’s your criteria for keeping pieces, and what dimensions do you consider useful?

I put together a quick decision tree to guide you.

@Jody
Newton’s third law of scraps: You’ll need it as soon as it’s gone.

Totally agree.

@Jody
I think I’ve cracked the mystery of why my pile only grows. Thanks for the tip.

@Jody
Forget the decision-making. Just keep it all!

@Jody
If I could, I’d upvote this a hundred times! :laughing:

@Jody
Never throw anything away!

@Jody
Easy solution:
Keep it all.
Toss it all.
I keep scraps for years, sorting them out once in a while. No right answer here.

I was going to upvote but you’re sitting at 420!

People actually throw scraps out? Didn’t know that was allowed!

Only the truly heartless toss scraps!

Keep all of it. You can make those chaos cutting boards.

Just watched some tutorial videos… always wondered how to make them. Now I know! A lot of gluing but should be worth it.

@Dale
You’ll have to do a lot of milling, but if you got the wood for free, it could be a nice project and maybe make some cash back.

Got it all for free! Just got a Dewalt and Stanley #4 planer too, so I’m hoping milling is half the fun!

@Dale
Minor investment in safety gear like push sticks, ear, and eye protection, and you’ll be good to go.
