Is Home Depot really selling "Hardwood" that's not hardwood?

Went to Home Depot to grab some 3/4x3/4 oak square dowels. They usually stock all kinds of square and round dowels together, and in the past, they’ve always been either oak or poplar, clearly marked as “Hardwood.” But today, while they’re still labeled “Hardwood” and priced like it, they’re all actually pine now. No price drop either. Asked an employee, and he just shrugged, saying, “most people who buy those don’t know the difference anyway.” Safe to say, I’m a bit annoyed.

Probably just stocked in the wrong spot. Unless you see it in multiple stores or sizes, it’s probably just a mistake by someone.

Yeah, barcodes don’t match.

One’s 1", the other’s 3/4". Totally different product. Could be a customer moved it too.

Bought some dowels yesterday, and each one was in the wrong place.

@Dallas
Checked all sizes, all labeled as hardwood but actually pine. Couldn’t find any oak dowels.

It was all sizes.

Maybe they couldn’t get oak/poplar in and decided to fill the spot with pine. When you scan it, it’ll be the pine price, not the one on the shelf. Unless they match.

But nowhere on the dowel itself says it’s hardwood; it just got put in the wrong spot.

I googled the UPC code, and it linked to this page …
https://www.upcindex.com/95624515665

Home Depot actually does sell these as “hardwood” dowels.

Edit: Why the downvotes? Did I miss something, or did I say something wrong?

@Blaine
The prices were the same, and when scanned, it came up as “hardwood.”

It has ‘PNE’ on it. Maybe that means Pine? Probably a mistake by someone who didn’t know the difference.

@Linden
Interesting thing is, the vendor stocks these bins for Home Depot. So it might not even be Home Depot’s fault. Probably just a substitute they didn’t get told about.

@Linden
Did you ask anyone about it there?

Pretty sure the poster did mention it earlier.

Good catch! Sounds like typical employee indifference though. Just another reason to shop specialty lumber stores.

The barcodes aren’t the same. That dowel’s just in the wrong spot. So yeah, definitely a stocking error.

@Branley
I get it, but all the dowels labeled hardwood were pine, every single one.

@Branley
The barcode shown is https://www.upcindex.com/95624515665. They’re definitely selling a pine dowel as hardwood.

So the barcode is different than the shelf code. If you took this up to checkout, you’d pay the Pine price, not the hardwood price. Pine square dowels, 36in long, go for about $4 at my local store.

Probably just a shelving error by someone. But honestly, we’re talking about a dollar or less difference for the dowel. Sure, it’s annoying if you’re picky about materials, but no harm done.

@Toryn
True, but still, all labeled hardwood dowels were actually pine.
