When I worked at HD, oak dowels were on one side, pine on the other.
Most people couldn’t tell them apart.
Pay minimum, get minimum effort. No real training.

Checked, no oak dowels anywhere.
I’ll check my store! Could be a one-off mistake?

Maybe, but still pretty annoying if they’re charging oak prices.

Did you try buying it to see if it’s actually that price? Barcodes don’t match, so maybe not.
@Luca
Yeah, it’s selling at that price.

Used to happen at HD, but they stopped doing that a while back.
Barcode points to:
Waddell 8312U 3/4 in. x 3/4 in. x 36 in. Hardwood Square Dowel
MSRP: $3.96
UPC: 095624515665
Balsa wood is technically hardwood, so close enough? Lol.

Asked a clerk at Lowes about a bolt, had to explain the difference between bolt and nut. Oh boy.

Best show moment ever.

My local HD has some knowledgeable folks, not all, but some.

There’s a retired plumber and old electrician I trust for advice at my Lowe’s.

Worked at both big stores before. Most employees knew their stuff, but millwork folks might not be woodworkers. Shaming workers is just rude.

Most HD employees, teens included, are pretty decent.

Menard’s in the Midwest is great too… if you can find someone to ask.

Worked at a smaller hardware store, learned tons just talking to contractors and Googling. But it’s true, retail workers don’t get paid enough to put in major effort. Most folks didn’t stick around long either.
