Is it normal for an employer to verify a doctor’s note?

So, my employer reached out to my doctor about an ADA accommodation letter I gave them. They wanted to confirm it was legit and sent an email to my doctor’s office. IDK if this is normal or if they’re crossing a line. Has anyone dealt with something like this before?

Yeah, it’s allowed, but only the first time. If they keep checking the same condition, it could be harassment.

Oh, I see. So, they can’t keep asking every time I need the accommodation?

Exactly. They can only verify it the first time. After that, it’s considered invasive.

I think they just want to confirm the paperwork is legit. Employers are cautious these days.

True, but they need to stick to the rules. Can’t be pestering the doctor every time.

What did the email say? Did it sound accusatory or just a routine check?

It was polite. They just asked if the nurse practitioner on the letter is part of the staff and if they signed it.

Sounds like they’re just covering their bases then. Nothing too sketchy about that.

IDK if I’d feel okay with that. Feels like they don’t trust their employees.

Yeah, that’s kinda how it feels. Like, do they really need to double-check everything?

FYI, you can look up ADA rules online if you’re unsure about what’s allowed. Might help clear things up.

Good idea. I’ll dig into it and see what’s okay and what’s not.
