Is it normal for teachers to make kids skip breaks to catch up?

Hey folks, looking for some advice. My daughter is a little behind in school, and her teacher has her working through every recess, lunch, and break to catch up. I don’t feel great about this, and I’m wondering if there are any rules about kids needing their breaks. We’re in Jackson County, Oregon. Anyone have any insights?

I’d feel the same way. Breaks are important, especially for younger kids. Maybe talk to the school counselor? They could give you some direction.

Good idea. I didn’t think about the counselor but could be a good next step. Thanks!

Yeah, sometimes counselors have more say on this stuff than the teachers.

My kid’s school lets them bring work home if they’re behind. Seems odd they wouldn’t allow that. Maybe you can ask about that option again?

I did bring it up with her teacher, but they seem strict about keeping it at school. Not sure why.

Could be they’re worried about fairness? Still seems rough for your daughter to lose every break.

If she’s struggling to keep up, maybe look into a 504 plan or IEP? Some kids just need more time, and those plans help with stuff like that.

Thanks for mentioning that! I might ask about it. She’s just always been a little slower-paced, and maybe this would help.

Good call! My nephew has one, and it’s made a big difference.

Honestly, it might help to send a formal email or letter to the school admin. They usually respond to stuff like that.

You’re right. I’ll try to get something written up. Thanks for the tip!

Maybe look into Oregon’s education policies? Some states have specific rules on break times for kids.

Good point! I’ll see what I can find. Just want her to have a balanced day.
