Is it okay for my daughter to lose recess to catch up on work?

Hey everyone, I’m a bit concerned about my daughter’s teacher making her work through all her recesses and lunch breaks to catch up on assignments. She’s a little behind, but this feels like too much. We’re in Jackson County, Oregon, and I’m wondering if this is even allowed? Has anyone dealt with this kind of situation?

That sounds like a lot for a kid to handle. I’d definitely ask the school if there’s another way to help her catch up. Kids need breaks too, ya know?

Yeah, I agree. Maybe they could give her extra help after school instead of taking away her recess?

@Charlie
I suggested she bring some work home to make up for it, but they said she can’t do that. It’s frustrating.

Have they given any support to help her catch up? Like tutoring or anything?

Not really. They just took away her break times to make her do the work. No other interventions or help.

@Wylie
Maybe push for an evaluation? If she’s struggling to keep up, they might need to offer her extra help.

Is there a rule about how much break time kids are supposed to get? This seems extreme.

I’m not sure about Oregon, but I know schools have to follow certain guidelines. Taking all her breaks just doesn’t seem right.

@Raleigh
That’s what I’m trying to figure out. I found some rules but nothing specifically on this issue. It’s confusing.

You might want to consult with an education lawyer. They could give you the best advice on what’s allowed and what isn’t.

Yeah, I might have to. I’m hoping the school works with us before it gets to that though.

I’d try writing a letter to the school district. Sometimes getting it in writing makes them take it more seriously.

Good call! Putting your concerns in writing might make the school rethink how they’re handling things.
