Issues with service records and pay grade credit—what are my options?

I worked for the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District (GLCSD) from 2016-2024, but my previous teaching experience at other districts, like Houston ISD and Austin ISD, was never fully credited toward my pay grade. Despite raising this issue with HR multiple times, I was told my service years would be applied to the 2024-2025 contract. However, after leaving the district in mid-2024, they refused to honor the credit, stating it wouldn’t be added since I no longer work there. I have documentation showing communication with HR and proof of my service records. How can I get the compensation and recognition for my service years that I’m owed?

Did the district ever provide an official reason for not including your previous service years?

They claimed they couldn’t verify some of the records, but I provided everything they asked for.

That sounds frustrating. You might want to request a detailed explanation in writing to have it on record.

Have you filed a formal grievance with the district? That could be a good place to start.

Not yet, but I’m planning to. I’m just trying to gather all my documentation first.

Good idea. Having everything organized will make your case much stronger when you file.

Do you have emails or other written proof that they promised to credit your years of service?

Yes, I have emails from HR stating they would apply the credit to my next contract.

That’s great evidence. If they’re not honoring that, you might have a case for breach of contract.

Have you looked into getting legal help? An attorney could help you push this forward.

I’m considering it, but I’m not sure what kind of lawyer would handle something like this.

You should find someone experienced in employment law, especially with public school systems. They’d know what to do.

You mentioned leaving the district. Did they give any reason why your service credits couldn’t be applied retroactively?

They just said that since I left, they wouldn’t update anything. It feels like an excuse.

That doesn’t sound fair. They should still honor the credits if they were earned while you worked there.
