New to Golf: Is My Club Distance Grouping Overlapping Too Much?

A few comments:

  • Most high handicappers can’t hit a 5i.
  • Consider some clubs at the longer end like 5w and 7w
  • Get a lesson on your driver. Given the implied swing speed from your 7i, you should be able to carry 220-230
  • When you do that, you’ll need the woods

Also, does this ratio seem pretty average or is my driver short in comparison, or any other outliers to make note of and focus on?

The data is very cool to see and will both excite you and also drive you crazy. Keep your data, and then compare it to standard club fitting specs.

I have had 5 professional fittings in my golf journey and the constant measure has been 6-8 yards per club with the irons. The big play is off the lowest iron, hybrids or lofted woods 7-9 . Everyone wants to hit it a mile for some reason rather than hitting it the same every time. Gotta think about that

Looks like you hit your 5 iron terribly (you should either leave it in the bag or try a hybrid or something) but everything else looks quite good, especially for a few months. Good progress!

Hey I started around september too and those are essentially my carry numbers -20yds. I can’t hit a 60 like that though, my SW (56) only goes 50yds. Now I’m just waiting for winter to end to get more practise in, sims are expensive during off season.

What a great improvement

Keep it up

On that second batch you look like your driver is rolling out a lot. Might want to work towards launching it a bit higher?

To answer specifically about the 5&6, you probably don’t hit your 5-iron high enough to make it make sense. That’s why hybrids exist. Consider changing your 5-iron to a 5-hybrid.

Where I’m concerned is actually your short irons. You’ve got 54 yards between your 7-iron and PW; 18y between each. That means you’re probably between clubs a lot when you’re hitting into greens. You’d rather be in the 12-14 yard range between those clubs. I don’t know anything about them, or how you hit them, but that’s not ideal.

Good luck, and keep grinding!

That’s not terrible.

One of my students picked up the game a year and a half ago. He’s taken quite a few lessons but is the most dedicated person I work with in terms of practice. I had him on the trackman yesterday and was really impressed with how well he was hitting it. He catches some thick or thin but his club path was consistent and he pushed/sliced a couple but nothing out of the ordinary. He’s older so his speed never got above 60 mph. A lot of people I work with see the club speed parameter and just try to beat their last swing. Doesn’t go well. I’m proud of the dude.

Your dispersion and overlapping distances look just fine for a new golfer. Keep it up and have fun.

Play D, 3h, 6i, 8i PW, 52, P for a while. Work on half or 3/4 shots with the irons to fill gaps.

You are likely ‘extending early’ meaning you flip the hands and sweep at the ball, which tends to send everything skyward. Or it could be, that you lack club head speed to keep the distances progressing.

Look at things like forward shaft lean, motorcycle move, hit hard stop quick. There’s lots to be gained by staying connected and swinging more efficiently, instead of trying to hit harder and farther.
