Received unwanted SMS verification codes... what's going on?

Hey everyone… I’ve been getting these SMS messages that look like verification codes, but they only contain a 5 or 6 digit number and no other text. This has happened three times in the last couple of days, and the numbers look like regular phone numbers, not short codes. I haven’t seen any suspicious activity on my accounts, and I changed my passwords and did a clean Windows install just before the first SMS. It feels odd to get a code without any context. Does anyone know what these could be?

If the service you’re using supports an authenticator app, I’d suggest switching your 2FA to that. It’s much safer since no one can access your 2FA codes without your device.

I’ve received similar messages before. I looked up the phone numbers on Google, and they sometimes identify the service sending the codes. If you don’t have an account with them, it could be a case of someone entering their number wrong.

It’s definitely strange to receive a code without any context. If it keeps happening, consider reporting it to your carrier. They might have more insights.

Just stay vigilant. Even if you don’t see anything wrong now, keep an eye on your accounts. Better safe than sorry!
