Requesting my full employment file... any advice?

I need to request a full copy of my employment file from my old job. I want to make sure I get everything, like any notes or verbal conversations they documented. Anyone know how I should phrase this or if I should include a deadline?

Definitely be specific! Mention everything you want, including informal notes, so they know you’re serious.

Yeah, I’ll make sure to include stuff like any handwritten notes or random comments that might be in there.

Good move! Sometimes those side notes can hold the most interesting info.

Have you thought about setting a deadline in the letter? That might speed things up.

Was thinking around 10-14 days. You think that’s fair?

Totally reasonable. Just a simple line about it should get them moving faster.

Be sure to ask for things like summaries of meetings or any verbal exchanges. Sometimes those are in the file.

Good idea, I’ll add it in. Didn’t think of those specifically.

Yeah, having those records can help if there’s anything you need to clarify later.

Did they mention any fees? Sometimes they charge for copying files, so worth checking.

I’ll make sure to ask. I’d rather know about any costs beforehand.

Good plan. Some places try to sneak in those fees, so better to check upfront.

If you’re in WA, check RCW 49.12.240. That’s the law about accessing employment files there. Could be helpful.

Thanks! I’ll look that up to make sure I’m getting everything I’m entitled to.

Yep, knowing the law helps. Sometimes they take requests more seriously if you mention specific rules.
