School denied my 8-year-old bathroom access... is this okay?

Today my son, who’s 8, wasn’t allowed to use the bathroom at school. They told him the nearest bathroom was being worked on, and the other one was too far. I happened to pick him up early and he was about to pee himself! I’m really upset and wondering if this is even allowed? It’s never happened before, but it feels wrong. What can I do?

That’s really not okay! Schools should always have a bathroom available for kids. Have you talked to the principal about it yet?

I’m planning to talk to them tomorrow. I didn’t know what to say at the time but now I’m really mad.

You should definitely bring it up! No kid should be put in that situation.

That’s so frustrating. Even if they were fixing a bathroom, they should’ve made another one available. I’d send a formal complaint for sure.

Yeah, I think that’s what I’ll do. I can’t believe they didn’t have a plan for this.

Definitely push this with the school. If they don’t take it seriously, you should go to the district.

Good advice. I’m going to bring it up with the principal first and see what they say.

IDK how they can deny a bathroom request. That sounds like a basic right. Definitely something to follow up on.

What’s IDK mean?

Oh, sorry, it means ‘I don’t know.’

Yeah, I’m going to follow up for sure. I feel like it’s just not okay.

I’d check into local laws too. Schools should be providing basic needs like bathroom access. This might be a bigger issue than just the school.

I hadn’t thought about looking into local laws, that’s a good idea. I’ll do that if they don’t take it seriously.
