I asked for my child to be retained in 3rd and 4th grade the past two years, but the school never responded. Now my child is in an inappropriate grade at their new school, and I’m not sure what to do next. Has anyone been through something like this? How can I fix it?
Did you keep any records of your requests, like emails or written letters? Those might help if you want to escalate this.

Yeah, I have a few emails and notes from when I called. Hopefully, that’s enough to show I tried.

That’s great. You can use those to back up your case if you bring it to the district or higher-ups.
Retention policies depend on your state, but schools are usually required to address parental requests. Have you reached out to the district office?

Not yet, but I’ll contact them. Hopefully, they can explain what happened.

They should at least give you an answer. Be persistent—it’s your right to know why they didn’t respond.
You can also request a meeting at the new school to discuss placement. They’re required to listen and work with you.

Thanks, I’ll set something up soon. I just hope they’re more helpful than the last school.
If you’re still not getting anywhere, you might want to consider consulting an education lawyer. They can guide you on state-specific laws.

That’s a good idea if nothing else works. I’ll look into it.
Some states have specific rules for retention in grades like 3rd and 4th. Look into your local policies—it might help you make your case.

I’ll definitely check that out. Thanks for the tip!
