Got a 2010 Tundra double cab limited, V8 5.7L, with 199k miles. It’s not passing inspection because of some serious frame rot underneath, and I was quoted $8-10k to replace it. Mechanic says it would still work in a state without inspections. I’m in NYS.
Interior has some damage – carpets got messed up by pets, and sometimes the radio dash doesn’t work, so I have to use the steering controls. There’s also some rust around the back hatch and wheel wells, and it’ll need new brakes and tires soon.
Someone offered me $2k to tow it away … should I take it or hold out for a bit more?
Maybe look for someone online who’d come pick it up for $2,500–$6,000. If it’s running and drivable, and has usable parts, it might be worth at least $3,000.
A 5.7 Tundra with a bed and four doors has its appeal, even with rust. I’d pay around $3,300 if I found one locally. Could save some wear and tear on my other car for short trips, and if it broke down, I could use the engine for parts for my dad’s truck.
There are car auction sites too, just make sure you check their rules on rust and frame issues. You might get more than junkyard value without much hassle.

Don’t they have any farm vehicle exemptions in your state? It’s rough they rot your vehicles out with road salt, then expect you to buy a new one for $30k or more.
