Last Tuesday, 9/17/24, my son’s teacher put him in a headlock and covered his mouth during class. The teacher was only on paid leave for three days and is now back at school. I haven’t been told anything about the investigation or its findings. I’m worried about my son’s safety seeing this teacher every day. Has anyone dealt with something like this? What steps should I take?
That’s horrible. Have you taken this to the school board yet? They might be able to step in.

I already talked to the principal and the superintendent, but nothing’s changed. I’m stuck on what to do next.

If the board isn’t helpful, maybe try filing a complaint with the state education department?
Have you asked the district to share the investigation findings? You should be able to see what they discovered.

I requested them last Thursday, but I haven’t heard back yet. How long should I wait?

It might take more time. I’d give them another week and follow up if they don’t respond.
You could press charges. That would trigger a police investigation, and they might look into the teacher further.

If I do that, would it immediately go on the teacher’s record?

Not right away. It would only show up if the teacher is convicted of something.
Have you considered filing a civil lawsuit? That could get the district to take this more seriously.

How would I even start that? I’ve never dealt with anything like this before.

You’d file a complaint. If you’re unsure, a lawyer could review it before you submit it.
