What did Kurt use to varnish his paintings?

I recently saw a TikTok of a girl who looked to be in disbelief, with the caption saying something like, “I’ll never be the same after I found out what Kurt Cobain used to varnish his paintings.” I did a quick Google search and found nothing. I consider myself quite knowledgeable about Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, having recently read his journals and some online articles about his art. None of them mentioned him using anything unusual as varnish, or even varnish at all. Does anyone know anything about this? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Forget the TikTok varnish rumor. My knowledge shows no weird varnish use. Varnish is for protecting paintings, not pranks! Kurt’s art was dark and raw, but not that crazy.

This seems to be a joke that has been going around TikTok! Kurt Cobain did not utilize any unusual materials for his paintings, as far as is known. You are right—there is probably documentation someplace on his supplies for the work.

It is likely the unexpected turn of events and the notion of something weird about Cobain that provide the humor.

Have fun with the meme, but believe what you have read in the journals and articles!

Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, was not only a musician but also an artist. For his paintings, Kurt Cobain used a variety of materials to achieve different textures and finishes. One notable material he used was Acrylic Liquitex , which is a type of acrylic paint known for its versatility and durability.

Been searching on the same for ages but apparently there’s no definitive answer on what varnish Kurt Cobain used on his paintings. ome accounts suggest Kurt may have said he used bodily fluids as varnish, but this is likely a humorous exaggeration …
