People often ask why I don’t drink, and I never know what to say. What do you all think is the best response?
Because I don’t want to. Simple as that.
I just say, ‘I don’t like it.’ Honestly, they don’t even need to know that much, but it keeps them quiet.
‘Long story, kid…’ works every time.
I’ve been sober for seven years now. When people ask, I tell them it’s because I have depression, and drinking only makes it worse.
I don’t like how it makes me feel or act.

That’s funny because I kinda do, lol.
Medical reasons. I just leave it at that.
I say my body reacts badly, and whenever I drink, I get explosive diarrhea. Nobody ever asks follow-up questions after that!
I say I’m allergic to it. Easiest excuse ever.
I just respond, ‘What a weird question.’ It usually makes them stop.
I like to mess with them and say, ‘Who told you that? I totally drink!’
I tell them I’m on antibiotics for a massive abscess on my leg, then I offer to show it to them. That usually ends the conversation.
I jokingly say, ‘If you let me puke in your mouth, I’ll drink.’ It always gets a reaction.
I laugh and say, ‘I’m a cheap date anyway!’
I just say, ‘Because I love the Jamaican vibe,’ and leave it at that.
I tell them I don’t need alcohol. I’m high on life!
It interacts badly with my medication. People usually don’t push further.
I say, ‘I don’t want to,’ or, ‘I don’t like the taste.’ Sometimes I add, ‘I’ve got stuff to do tomorrow.’ And that’s it. No is a full sentence.
I keep it short: ‘Cause I don’t.’
