What exotic pet should I get next?

I currently have chinchillas, mice, rabbits, sugar gliders, and two hamsters. In the past, I’ve also had guinea pigs, crested geckos, and rats.

I have some extra setups available: a double critter nation cage, tanks (20, 10, 40, and 75 gallons), an x-pen, and a few dog crates in different sizes.

I’d love to add a new pet or two but can’t decide what to go for. I’ve been thinking about micro squirrels but I’m open to ideas.

I work as an animal educator at a zoo, so I’m confident in learning and providing the proper care for any new animal. I’m mainly interested in mammals but would consider reptiles. Birds are off the list, though.

Budget isn’t a big issue, but I’d prefer something that isn’t extremely expensive. Since I live in a remote area, finding exotics might be a bit of a challenge.

What would you suggest? I’m excited to hear your recommendations.

Have you thought about African soft-fur rats? They’re amazing pets. If reptiles are an option, bearded dragons or monitor lizards could be great too.

How about a visual aid to consider your setup? Here is the link: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

I’d be more worried about finding proper vet care for the pet, especially since you’re in a remote area. That might limit your options.

Good point. Luckily, there’s an exotic vet about 45 minutes from me who can handle almost anything. So that shouldn’t be an issue.

What about Brazilian short-tailed opossums, degus, or acacia rats? All of them could work with your critter nation cage.

Ever thought about getting a hedgehog? They’re adorable and unique.

How about a marmoset monkey? If that’s too much, maybe a leopard gecko?

Dormice could be a fun addition.

Make sure whatever pet you choose is legal where you live. I’ve got a woodchuck, and they’re amazing. They’re even litterbox trained. My biggest challenge was finding a suitable cage, so we had to build one ourselves.

Maybe focus on giving more attention to the pets you already have instead of adding more. Just a thought.
