I want to replace my old desktop and since I’ll be traveling a lot, I thought it would be smart to invest in a top quality laptop. My budget is pretty much open as I believe you get what you pay for, so I’d rather spend more now for a device that lasts longer and causes fewer problems.
Lenovo Legion 9i, ASUS ROG, MSI Titan and Razer Blade. It really comes down to what you prefer in terms of weight, size, OLED options and such.

Isn’t the 9i just a 7i with a marketing gimmick about liquid cooling? It doesn’t have a radiator. It’s just cycling hot water back!
@Ashton
You’re right. It has some extra features, but overall, the 9i is just the top version of what Lenovo offers in laptops.

Do both models still come with a plastic keyboard? At that price, I would expect these to compete better with others out there.
@Ashton
Unless you’re doing something extreme, most keycaps are plastic. It’s a membrane keyboard, but it feels good to type on. The keys are high quality, and I believe both 7i and 9i use the same type.
The main differences are that the 9i lights up its logo and has a rear light strip along with the liquid cooling, while the 7i only has a front light strip and lacks liquid cooling.
For many users, the 7i provides much better value. The 9i is for those with lots of cash who want the absolute best. You’re getting maybe 200 bucks worth of upgrades for an extra 1000 bucks.
My Legion 7i feels like a tank and is the sturdiest laptop I’ve ever owned.

Are you saying the keyboard deck is plastic?
The tray area is metal alloy. It feels solid.
@Shiloh
I was actually asking about the area around the keys, not the keycaps. And the liquid cooling isn’t truly water cooling since you don’t have a radiator to cool the water.

The 9i allows the user to disable the Chinese government backdoor feature, while the 7i doesn’t have that option. It’s always on.

You should save money and just get the 7i. Reviews indicate that the 9i doesn’t have significantly better cooling than the 7i. I recently got a 14th gen i9 7i with a 4090 and it’s incredibly powerful.

How about upgrade options? For example, can I increase the RAM or storage? Are they soldered on?
@Niko
Most thicker gaming laptops usually have two slots for SO DIMM memory and m.2 SSDs you can swap out.
@Niko
The thinner models might have soldered RAM. For instance, I heard that the Zephyrus G14 has soldered RAM.

Yes, that’s correct. Most 2024 laptops come with soldered RAM, but you should check before buying. If you go for one of these, getting a 32GB RAM option would be smart.

What do you think of ASUS TUF?
@Wil
For price to value, they are decent but I wouldn’t call them high-end. The max you can get is a 4070, no options for 4080 or 90.
@Wil
I’ve heard that model can be a gamble. 8 out of 10 have some build quality issues, but the other 2 are great budget gaming laptops. Buying a TUF means you better hope for a good unit.

I’m thinking about getting a new laptop and saw your comment. Do you think Asus ROG laptops are better than the Strix models?
@Merlin
Strix models are part of the ROG family like Strix, Scar, and Zephyrus but come in different weights and sizes. I went with the Scar since I wanted a 16 inch with mini LED.
