What makes mechanics the angriest? Got stories?

What are the things customers do that make mechanics upset? I’d love to hear the worst stories or the most annoying things you’ve had to deal with.

Welcome to this forum! If you’re asking a question, please include details like the year, make, model, mileage, engine size, and whether the transmission is automatic or manual. It helps everyone here give you better answers.

And remember, keep it civil and report any rule-breaking behavior.

Bringing your car full of gas for a fuel pump recall when the notice says it should be under a quarter tank.

Yep, we get those all the time. The recall specifically says less than a quarter tank, but people show up with it full, and it wastes our time.

@Zev
At my shop, we just reschedule them. We don’t deal with that. If someone shows up with a filthy car, we even tell them to clean it and come back.

I wish we’d do that! Our advisors let everything slide. Someone will come in needing a battery change, but their trunk is full of trash and gym clothes. Or they’ll show up for tires but have no idea where their wheel lock key is.

Our advisors are the same. They’ll side with the customer instead of backing us up. Then we end up spending unpaid time fixing stuff like pumping out gas tanks because the recall budget didn’t cover it.

How do your surveys look after rescheduling people like that?

Your shop sounds amazing. Are you hiring? lol

@Zev
Guess you get a free 3/4 tank of gas out of it, though.

How about when someone brings the car in almost empty and says, ‘The noise only happens at 68 mph after driving for 10 minutes.’ What am I supposed to do with that?

@Keaton
Happens way too often. Last week, I had someone complain about a vibration. The car’s fuel range showed a couple of miles left. Not gonna happen.

Don’t forget when they show up with a two-door Civic and a backseat full of junk.

I’m just glad my fuel pump sits under the back seat. Easy plug-and-play for me!

Well, I’m not gonna bring my car in half!

Packing the driver’s seat area with junk and pushing the seat all the way forward.

I’m at the point where I just move it back without caring. Your stuff is getting crushed.

@Milan
I’ve heard that crunch so many times!

Bringing your own parts… and all of them are wrong.

And don’t forget, they also won’t tell you the actual problem. They just hand you parts and expect you to figure it out.
