What pet should I buy and what are the pros and cons of each

I’m considering a Syrian hamster, 2 gerbils, or 2 fancy mice. I’ve done a lot of research already, but I’d still appreciate any additional tips or insights.

I think hamsters are the most rewarding. Gerbils tend to be more hands-off. I’ve bred well-maintained mice for years, but they’re fragile and have shorter lifespans. Hamsters are great; they live about 2-3 years, don’t smell much compared to other pets, and it’s really fun to create elaborate cages for them. I’ve had several and loved them all. I’m even considering getting another one soon.

@Keaton
How long did your mice typically live? I’m also leaning towards hamsters, as gerbils don’t seem to match my personality.

Cacti can withstand, even thrive on neglect.

Ferret: Pros - bundles of limitless joy. Cons - teaching them not to remove your fingers.

I would love one, but unfortunately, I don’t have the space right now.

Where do you live? In the UK, ferrets are quite inexpensive. I got two for about 5 pounds. They’re not very popular as pets here though, mainly used for hunting and pest control.

@Val
I’m in Ireland; they’re pretty pricey here, about 90 euros each. Plus, my house doesn’t have enough space for them.

I’ve also had mice, hamsters, and gerbils. I found gerbils a bit dull and mice aren’t very interactive either. If I were to choose again, I’d go for dwarf hamsters. They can live in pairs, enjoy play fighting, and are just adorable.

@Val
Are dwarf hamsters difficult to train? I’ve heard they’re a bit more challenging than Syrians. Can they be alone for a month or so, or do they need a companion right away?
