I found this camshaft and noticed a round lobe on it. It’s not concentric, and I’m wondering what it’s for. Could it be for balance or something else? Anyone know?

That’s a bearing surface.

Looks like a fuel pump lobe. Some older cars used the camshaft to run a mechanical fuel pump. Could be one of those.

I’m not a mechanic, but as an engineer, it might be a balance lobe. It could help keep the camshaft from wobbling at high speeds. The ignition order might make balance tricky, so this might offset that.
@Sage
That sounds spot on. It could also be used later for rebalancing. I’m a lower-level mechanic, but this explanation feels correct.

Balance crew, let’s stick together.

You’re not concentric.
Your mom’s not concentric. Sorry, I had to go there.

Bro, too far.

Are you sure it’s not concentric? Maybe the lobe is just on the other side?

It’s not concentric, but it might still act as a bearing surface.

How would a bearing work if it’s not concentric with the shaft?
Which engine is this from? It might be for a fuel pump.

I thought the same. If it’s not perfectly round, it could be for a fuel pump.

If it’s an older engine, maybe it’s for a low-pressure fuel pump. Or, it could just be part of the bearing journal.

Not sure about the engine. It’s not mine, but I think it might’ve had a pump.
Can you post a picture of the whole camshaft on a table so we can see everything?

Yeah, that would clear up a lot of the confusion and save us from more arguing.
