On August 2, 2007, Majid Kavousifar and his nephew, Hossein Kavousifar, were executed for assassinating Masoud Moghaddasi, a judge from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court. Moghaddasi was one of the judges responsible for sentencing thousands of political prisoners to death during the 1988 executions in Iran. So, as to why Majid was smiling?

He was smiling and comforting his nephew, who was being hanged beside him. They had both killed a judge.
Majid’s smile? It was his way of showing defiance and perhaps relief. For him, facing his end with a smile was a statement—something like saying, “I’m ready, and I’m not afraid.” It’s a haunting image of someone finding their own kind of peace in the final moments.
He smiled because he understood that the people had attained freedom. This man is blessed by God for his convictions.
