Why is my friend’s car leaking ATF where the CV axle goes in? Could it be a bad fit?

It’s probably just the seal. They can look fine and still leak.

What about the play in the axle? Seems like a lot more movement than normal.

That’s because the snap ring is missing. Without it, the axle will move too much and leak.

Replace the seal first and go from there.
