Anyone Else Asked to Repay CERB?

When did they first reach out about eligibility? Reviews usually take a while. And did they ask for anything specific?

I got the letter about 6 months ago. Submitted everything and assumed it was done since I was eligible. An agent called 3 weeks ago and said the audits are moving faster now.

@Jin
Anything specific in their request?

They asked for bank statements. I redacted unrelated info and sent them. I got a denial a week later, then today’s repayment notice.

@Jin
I wouldn’t redact anything. They’re looking for transparency.

CRA actually told me to redact non-relevant info. I left all credits visible, even the smallest amounts.

@Jin
Maybe the redactions caused some confusion?

Were you still working up until the first two weeks of March 2020?

Yes, my records show income in March, then again in June when I returned to work.

What period does the letter cover?

@Lennon
From March 2020 (no CERB then) to June 2020. My last CERB payment was in May 2020.

Sounds like there’s a T4 issue with income reporting for those periods.

I was on CERB with no income during that time.

@Jin
The CRA might be assuming income because of how the T4 summarizes yearly income.

@Jin
If your T4’s Box 58 doesn’t show May-June income, it could be an error.

@Jin
Is it possible your employer paid you later for that time?

When you repay, you get a T4A that can be deducted. Try not to pay back if you qualified.

I owe 10k for CERB and I’ve just let them take it out of my benefits. Should I reach out to avoid any issues with wage garnishing?

If you ignore them, yes, they could garnish wages or freeze accounts. Better to arrange a payment plan.

You can set up monthly payments. Give them a call to ask.

If you’re already paying back, they’re probably okay with that. I was told they’re not charging interest on CERB repayments.
