Hey everyone… I’ve got a quick question. I’ve got an 03 Chevy 1500 with the 5.3 motor and Quadrasteer, only 70k miles on it. My question is, are the Quadrasteer frames the same as the regular ones or different? This truck used to be my grandpa’s, and he drove it in winter for a while, but it’s been sitting for 4 years. Salt has eaten away at the frame, and there are brittle spots. I’m thinking about replacing the frame. If anyone has any info about the differences between the frames, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks in advance… hope you all have a good day.
Replacing the whole frame? That’s a big job, and it’s not something people usually do unless money isn’t a concern at all. I’d just drive it until it falls apart, to be honest.
Yeah, I get that. But the truck has low miles, and I got it from my grandma after my grandpa passed away, so it has a lot of sentimental value. I’m not too worried about the cost. It’s more of a weekend project for me, and I’ll keep it in my garage, so no rush.
Depends on how bad the rust is and what you want to use the truck for.
The rust is pretty bad. The driver’s side control arm mount is cracking where it connects to the frame. I’m not sure if it’s easier to replace that part of the frame or not. It’s so brittle that when I jack it up, it starts to crumble. But it’s just a weekend driver right now, and I have a Jetta for my daily commute. The truck means a lot to me since it was my grandpa’s, and I want to keep it in the family.
You could try spraying the whole frame with fluid film. It’ll slow down the rust a lot. As for the cracking, I’m not sure, but maybe you could get it welded. It’s worth looking into.
